Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica

Our second day in Costa Rican waters found us cruising through the gulf on the inner side of the Osa Peninsula known as Golfo Dulce, or “Sweet Gulf.” Unfortunately, our good friend and naturalist Rafael Robles had to disembark ahead of schedule, early in the morning. However, we were promptly met by Margrit Ulrich, a charming Costa Rican naturalist, who was able to join in with our exploration of the Eden-like gardens of Casa Orquideas. Scarlet macaws greeted us as we walked on the manicured trails of the property, while the naturalists pointed out native and exotic plants, as well as some of the colorful avian life that hung around the premises.

Reluctantly, we said good-bye to Ron and Trudy McAllister, owners of Casa Orquideas, and boarded the Sea Voyager in time for a well-deserved lunch on the lounge, while sailing a few miles west to our next destination.

Later in the afternoon, we had quite a selection of activities to choose from. Some of us decided to give the kayaks another try, and we paddled up Rio Rincon, a small calm river, fringed with mangroves and wonderful bird life. Others opted for a Zodiac cruise up the same river, yet numerous others joined Fico and Rick on a road walk. All options had a common destination: a roadside cantina, where cold beer and soft beverages awaited us. The tide started to go down and we resumed our march back to the vessel.

After a stupendous dinner Brian, our video chronicler showed a video premier of the first few days of our adventures in Panama and Costa Rica.
