Genovesa Island
Today while visiting this breathtaking island I could not avoid thinking about how fortunate we all are just to be here. It is estimated that approximately one million birds call this place home. All of them carry on with their lives peacefully in just 5.4 square miles! This fact by itself is amazing, but their approachability is even more stunning. Everywhere, literally everywhere you look, can you marvel at the amazing opportunities you have to be in intimate contact with the birds. In the picture I took today I did not use a zoom lens, I was just very close to it with the camera, as you can see. The pictured juvenile red-footed booby was a perfect subject, inquisitive, cooperative and excited. At one point I felt I was the one being observed. This feeling cannot be explained in simple words, you have to live it to believe it.
At every step there is something going on. It is a real thrill, almost a spiritual experience, to have the privilege to observe wildlife at such close range. After a visit to Genovesa your whole perception about birds can change. If you did not pay much attention to birds before, from here on you will develop little by little a real fascination for them. If you already liked them before coming here, now you will love them. If you love birds like I do, you will feel in heaven. Genovesa Island, a true gem among the Galapagos Islands, makes you think that heaven is a place on Earth.
