Bartolome & Santiago Islands
It is hard to believe that this week has come almost to and end. After seven days of full excitement our guests had enjoyed today as if it was the first day.
Our visit in the morning to Bartolome Island was superb. The geology of that little island is amazing! A full display of colors against the lava flows and the volcanic-shape splatter cones were one of the highlights of the morning activities. Of course, this was only topped later with the snorkeling, when a penguin decided to buddy up with some of our guests that were swimming at the shallow part of the beach.
The afternoon was equally as good. We had snorkeling activities and then a nice walk along the shoreline at Santiago Island. Just towards the end of the walk we found some sea lions. This time they were not the regular type that we had seen all week, but the Galapagos fur sea lions.
They have quite a few differences that make them unique, therefore they are consider endemic to this archipelago. Their beautiful fur made them very desirable by the skin hunters back in the beginning of the 19th century and the population was unfortunately severally diminished. Nowadays, as every single species in the Galapagos, this species is protected and fortunately, the consciousness of people has changed into a much more environmentally oriented one, so very few people care anymore about buying fur coats!
This week in the Galapagos has been great. We saw a lot of wildlife and we learn about conservation and protection of ecosystems so fragile like Galapagos, but the best part of it is that everyone is thinking in even a much better way about nature, and I am sure that, that thinking will be passed along and reflected on the next trip that our guests take, and that feeling warms up my heart and it is what makes my job worth it!
