You won’t believe what I am about to tell you! This is one amazing sighting that will surprise those of you who have heard about the famous Lonesome George. Today, at around 10:00 in the morning, in the private corral of our Galapagos celebrity “Mr. Tortoise George”, several Polaris guests witnessed a very close encounter that he had with one of his - what we have thought to be, despicable - girlfriends.
This is unbelievable, but true. Confirmed bachelor George, for reasons totally unknown, decided today to mate with one of his two-lady tortoise companions. These same females have shared his corral for more than 10 years.
George is the last one of his kind; the last tortoise from Pinta Island. The females that share his pen are from the closest geographical island, Isabela. It is thought that Isabela’s tortoises are the most closely related to George genetically speaking, too. We don’t know what is going to happen after today’s intimate encounter. We’ll just have to wait and see. However, this behavior has been reported a few other times over the past years.
What stimulated George today to conduct himself this way? It is a mystery to us. We wanted to show a picture of George in action, but we’ll have to leave the details to your imagination.
