Bear Island

The light at the end of the tunnel is not always the headlight of an approaching train. During our Zodiac cruise of the unswervingly sheer cliffs at the south end of this lonely island, the double-ended sea cave known as the Pearly Gates provided us with a portal to the other side of the island. With the sea pounding it’s way through this narrow tunnel and black-legged kittiwakes shrieking and wheeling overhead, we explored along the base these wild shores. Fog often obscured the tops of the cliffs in the morning but by afternoon it had burnt off to provide us with a hot afternoon of hiking and kayaking. The bottom photo shows the view enjoyed by the intrepid “long hikers”.
