Santa Cruz Island is the second largest island in the Galapagos Archipelago. We visited Cerro Dragon, located on the northwestern part of the island, during the end of the rainy season and there was an exuberance of vegetation with green everywhere!!
The hike in the morning brought us closer to the Galapagos land iguanas. It was amazing to find them warming up along the trail. Afterwards we cooled off with snorkeling along the coast and saw many colorful fish, all the species that you’d find in guides and books!
The afternoon was spent at Borrero Bay where we had time for a talk about the Human History of the Islands and Zodiac driving lessons for our young explorers. Later, kayaking and Zodiac exploration were offered. The mangrove area is a nursery for black-tipped reef sharks so there were plenty to observe. We also saw baby hammerhead sharks!
We ended a fantastic day with a circumnavigation of Daphne Islet, enjoying wine tasting and learning about the extensive studies of finches by Peter and Rosemary Grant. Galapagos, the world’s natural laboratory!
