Meet your guide after breakfast to visit the Plaza de Armas and surroundings in the heart of the colonial Lima. In 1988, UNESCO declared the historic center of Lima a World Heritage Site for its high concentration of historic buildings constructed during the Spanish colonial era. Ornate facades line centuries-old streets, adorned with more than 1,600 intricate balconies, palaces and cathedrals begun in 1535 under Francisco Pizarro. Continue to the serene Museo Larco, housing one of the world’s largest collections of Pre-Columbian art. The museum offers a window into Peru's rich history spanning 5,000 years and many cultures. See a trove of gold and silver jewelry, textiles and erotic Moche ceramics.
Lunch is at the Museum café, set amid bougainvillea in the gardens of the 18th-century mansion, and featuring Peruvian fusion cuisine. Return to the hotel with the remainder of the afternoon and evening at leisure. Dinner is on your own, to relax in the hotel or to try your choice of Lima's many fine restaurants featuring Peru's up-and-coming national cuisine. (B,L)
