Shelli Ogilvy
Growing up in Southeast Alaska, Shelli was surrounded by glaciers, whales, bears and towering mountains in a rural community disconnected from the road system. Those early experiences shaped a lifelong connection to the ocean and wild places. She earned a Bachelor of Science in marine biology in 2001 after beginning her career as a wilderness guide in 1997. Since 2006, she has led expeditions throughout both Antarctica and the Arctic as a polar guide, bringing extensive experience in sea kayaking, Zodiac operations and natural history.
Shelli has worked with several research groups studying the identification and biology of humpback and gray whales along the North Pacific coast. Decades spent in the polar regions have given her a firsthand perspective on changing ice, glaciers, wildlife distribution and the dynamic environments that define these landscapes. The ocean remains the place she most readily calls home, and she enjoys helping guests better understand the remarkable places they explore.
When not guiding, Shelli is an accomplished artist whose illustrated bird book was published in 2009 and whose work is displayed in several small galleries. She also enjoys working on her small cabin in Alaska, backcountry skiing and spending time outdoors. Whether sharing wildlife encounters, stories from the field or quiet moments on the water, she enjoys introducing others to the beauty and wonder of the polar regions.
