Jean Nizou
Jean is a French geologist who earned his Ph.D. in Marine Sedimentology from the University of Bremen, Germany. Over more than a decade in academia, he conducted research in geophysics, focusing on the magnetic properties of marine sediments, and in geochemistry, specializing in radiogenic isotopes preserved in sediment cores. Throughout his academic career, he taught geology both in lecture halls and in the field, from the coasts of Normandy to the mountains of the Alps, helping students connect scientific concepts with real-world landscapes and understand the geological processes that shape them.
Since 2017, Jean has worked as a guide and lecturer from the northernmost reaches of the planet to the southernmost, and many places in between. With so much to discover about geology, oceanography, glaciology and palaeoclimatology, he is continually reading, learning and sharing science with others. For Jean, travel provides an opportunity to connect scientific knowledge with firsthand observations in the field, bringing Earth's history into clearer focus while encouraging guests to see landscapes through a geological lens and appreciate the forces that continue to shape our planet.
While contemplation and observation are essential to understanding natural processes, staying active is just as important. When at home, Jean enjoys spending time outdoors mountain biking, hiking and rock climbing, whether along the coast or in the mountains.
