Gabriel Ortiz

A seasoned naturalist with extensive experience in Latin America, Gabe has been leading and interpreting the region’s natural and cultural history for many years. Born in Panama City, he developed an early interest in the outdoors and the diverse environments found throughout his home country. Birdwatching became a particular focus, and he has led birding tours throughout Panama for Audubon chapters, sharing his knowledge of local species, habitats and migration with birders of varied backgrounds and experience levels.

Gabe’s interests extend beyond wildlife to the history and culture of Panama. He is particularly interested in the country’s role as a crossroads of the world, shaped by centuries of movement, trade and cultural exchange. His broad knowledge allows him to connect natural history with the human stories that have influenced Panama and the wider region.

Since joining National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions in 2012, Gabe has led multiple trips throughout Latin America and met guests from around the world. His years in the field have expanded his knowledge of regional ecosystems while giving him opportunities to share Panama’s birds, wildlife, landscapes and history. Whether observing birds in the forest or discussing Panama’s place in world history, Gabe brings together his interests in nature, culture and education.
